FAQ

What is ASUA Safe Ride?
ASUA Safe Ride is a service sponsored by the Associated Students of the University of Arizona (ASUA). The service provides complimentary night time safety escorts in order to promote campus safety.
Who can use ASUA Safe Ride?
ASUA Safe Ride is open to all university-affiliated people. This means that all students, faculty, staff and their guests are welcome to use our service.
Does Safe Ride transport intoxicated people?
No. Our insurance policy strictly prohibits the transportation of individuals under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you call from a party where alcohol is being served or the phone operator or driver concludes that you are intoxicated, we will refer you to one of Tucson's taxi services.
Can Safe Ride take me to a party?
No. Because the vast majority of parties around the university area involve the serving of alcohol, we do not provide transportation to or from parties. If we determine that there is a party in progress at a given location, that location and the surrounding area will be suspended from service for the remainder of the night.
Should I tip the driver?
No. Because ASUA Safe Ride is a government service, tipping is not permitted. However, a “thank you” is always appreciated.
Who are the drivers?
All Safe Ride employees, from the management to the drivers, are UA students.
What are your boundaries?
ASUA Safe Ride has specific boundaries that encompass roughly a one-mile radius around campus. For more information, please view the boundries.
Why isn’t Safe Ride open on Saturday?
Demand for Safe Ride by sober individuals on Saturdays is very low, and many university services and buildings are closed.
Does Safe Ride operate during the summer?
Yes, Our hours for summer 2006 are 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM, Monday through Thursday. Please call our office at (520) 621-7233 for more information.
Will you pick me up after 1:00 AM?
Yes, if you placed your call before 1:00 AM. Although Safe Ride closes at 1:00 AM, this only means we stop accepting calls. If you call before 1:00 AM, we will make every effort to pick you up. We operate until everyone on our list has been picked up and dropped off.
What kind of vehicle will I be riding in?
ASUA Safe Ride operates the following vehicles: 1999 Saturn SL2, 2000 Ford Contour, 2000 Dodge Caravan, 2000 Club Car Golf Cart, 2001 Dodge Stratus, 2001 Toyota Corolla, 2002 Dodge Caravan, 2006 Classi Carts Patriot Golf Cart. All vehicles are white with red and blue stripes, a UA logo, and most vehicles have ASUA Safe Ride decals on the body. We do not always operate every vehicle each night.
How long do I have to wait?
A driver will usually be to your location within 5 to 7 minutes, but some nights are busier than others. We will do our best to notify callers if the wait time is significantly longer than 10 minutes, but please help the service run efficiently by waiting outside for the car before then. You can view our average response times by checking the statistics page.
I’ve been waiting outside for my ride and keep seeing Safe Ride cars pass me by. Why is that?
At any given time, there are up to 8 Safe Ride vehicles in service, all of which are on different routes assigned by the dispatcher. In most cases, the cars you see passing by are headed to pick-up or drop-off passengers in a different area than your location or destination. We do not simply “forget” about passengers; all of our calls are logged on a computer program for dispatching. Please remain patient until a vehicle is assigned and dispatched to you.
Is ASUA Safe Ride able to transport disabled passengers?
ASUA Safe Ride is prepared to accomodate passengers with all types of needs. While our regular service vehicles can handle almost any type of disability, in certain circumstances students using wheelchairs will be served by the cab company that ASUA Safe Ride contracts with for disability service. If you are disabled or have any other special needs, please inform the phone operator when you call so that arrangements can be made.
